Limerick Writing - Worksheet for Students

What is a Limerick?
A limerick is a funny five-line poem with a special rhythm and rhyme pattern.
Let’s learn how to write one step by step!

---

Step 1: Understand the Limerick Pattern
Limericks follow this rhyme scheme:
- Line 1: Rhymes with line 2 (A)
- Line 2: Rhymes with line 1 (A)
- Line 3: Rhymes with line 4 (B)
- Line 4: Rhymes with line 3 (B)
- Line 5: Rhymes with lines 1 and 2 (A)

Example Pattern:
A There once was a cat on a tree,
A Who juggled with acorns for free.
B She danced and she spun,
B Just having some fun,
A Until she fell down with a "wee!"

---

Step 2: Pick a Topic
Think of a person, place, or thing to write about.
It can be funny, silly, or surprising!
Examples: A dog, a spaceship, or your favorite animal.

Write your topic here:
My Topic: _______________________________________

---

Step 3: Think About the First Line
Start your limerick by introducing the topic.
- Use a place or a name to start.
- Example: “There once was a cat from Peru...”

Write your first line here:
Line 1: _______________________________________

---

Step 4: Add the Second Line
Write another line that rhymes with the first.
Example: “Who danced in a tutu so blue.”

Write your second line here:
Line 2: _______________________________________

---

Step 5: Write the Third and Fourth Lines
Now add two shorter lines that rhyme with each other.
- Example: “She twirled with a spin, / And fell in a bin.”

Write your third and fourth lines here:
Line 3: _______________________________________
Line 4: _______________________________________

---

Step 6: Add the Last Line
End with a funny or surprising line that rhymes with the first two.
- Example: “And giggled while eating fondue!”

Write your fifth line here:
Line 5: _______________________________________

---

Step 7: Practice and Share
Read your limerick out loud. Does it have a good rhythm? Is it funny or silly?
Share it with a friend or classmate!

---

Bonus Challenge
Draw a picture to match your limerick!

---

Example Limerick
Topic: A funny dog
Limerick:
